6 Simple Ways to Support the Immune System, All Year Round
- Supplements such as vitamin D, vitamin C and kids multivitamins can help support healthy immune system function*.
- Other ways to support a healthy immune system include a balanced diet, regular exercise, getting enough sleep, reducing stress and speaking to a healthcare provider.
There are signs that we receive throughout the year that are all signs the immune system is actively functioning in the body. No matter what time of the year, the immune system is constantly working to provide a response to foreign invaders. So, let’s remember to give our immune system some year-round care, too.
Here are a few simple ways to support a healthy immune system throughout the year.
Supporting the immune system throughout the seasons
In warmer months, one easy way to support a healthy immune system is by being out in the sun, where the body can create vitamin D. Be wary of sun damage, though — don’t skip out on the sunscreen, and don’t stay out too long.
Stay vigilant as temperatures fall! Studies suggest that cold air can diminish the response of the immune system.1 In the northern hemisphere, lack of sunlight may have effects on immune system function. Since the body cannot create vitamin D as often, it may not get the amount it needs.
How to support a healthy immune system year-round
1. Take your vitamins
Vitamin D: Vitamin D may assist the immune system by helping to regulate T and B-lymphocytes in the body.* The body can create vitamin D by being out in the sun, which is why it’s known as the sunshine vitamin. In food, it’s pretty hard to come by naturally, which is why many foods are fortified with vitamin D. To get the vitamin D the body needs, a supplement may be the way to go.
Sundown® Vitamin D3 2000 IU Gummies support bone, teeth and immune health.* These tasty gummies are available in natural strawberry, orange and lemon flavors.
Another option is the Sundown® Vitamin D3 2000 IU Softgels, which help maintain a healthy immune system and good general health.* These softgels also available in 1000 IU and 5000 IU.
Vitamin C: A potent antioxidant, vitamin C supports the immune response through the creation and spread of white blood cells. Some vitamin C-rich foods include citrus fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, baked potato, and tomatoes. Another way to get a healthy intake of vitamin C is through supplements.
Sundown® Vitamin C Gummies with Rose Hips & Bioflavonoids can be taken any time of the year to support overall wellness.* These orange-flavored gummies are a delicious way to help support the immune system.*

2. Get your exercise in
Exercise can help to increase circulation, manage stress levels, and improve sleep quality, which all, in turn, support a healthy immune system. The CDC suggests two and a half hours of exercise a week for healthy adults.2 Switch it up between aerobic exercise that gets the heart rate up and muscle-strengthening activity to keep bones and muscles strong.
3. Balance that diet
Eating a healthy, balanced diet provides the body with important nutrients that keep it energized. Based on FDA food intake guidelines, a healthy diet contains a balance of dietary fiber, vitamin D, calcium, iron and potassium. Avoid processed food, saturated fats, sodium, and added sugar.
4. You snooze, you win
Lack of sleep shows an association with weaker immune system response. With a good night’s sleep, the body can better support the optimal functioning of white blood cells.3 If you can’t get the recommended minimum of 7 hours each night, a quick power nap during the day may help.
5. Don’t stress the small stuff
Chronic stress makes it harder for the immune system to activate infection-fighting cells.4 Studies have shown that meditation has promising effects on curbing stress.5 Even a few minutes of mindfulness a day can help calm the body and put the mind at ease.
6. Practice good hygiene
Practicing proper hygiene is a great first line of defense that can keep nasty germs out of the body before they become a problem. Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. If you cough or sneeze, do so into your elbow. You know the drill!
7. Check in with your healthcare provider
Along with taking vitamins C and D, there are healthy choices you can make to support a healthy immune system, no matter what time of the year. Before making any significant changes to your diet, exercise, or supplements, speak to a healthcare provider about whether it works for you. As always, make sure to continue educating yourself and stay informed about the latest healthcare practices.
